RESCUE & RELOCATION
What Species Are We UNABLE to Accept?
|
Living Earth is UNABLE to accept the following:
REPTILES: Red eared sliders or other large water turtles (contact us about mud or musk turtles) Large tortoises like sulcatas (contact us about smaller tortoises or non PA-native box turtles) Large green iguanas Extra large constricting snakes – Boas and pythons over 9 feet in length Large crocodilians (contact us about dwarf caiman or baby alligators) Venomous snakes PA native herps (reptiles or amphibians) that have a zero take and/or zero possession limit (eastern box turtles, for example – they are no longer legal to possess in Pennsylvania). ***We can however relocate these animals from a location where they are not wanted, or are in danger, to a safe, nearby location.*** MAMMALS & BIRDS: Exotic mammals that require permits from the PA State Game Commission, and/or USDA permits. We are legally not allowed to possess these animals. PA native mammals or birds, injured or not – those need to go to licensed wildlife rehabbers. We can be contacted about these species, and we'll help you find a rehabber that will take them, as close to you as we can find. No one is legally allowed to possess these animals unless you are a licensed wildlife rehabber, or have a Furbearer Propagation Permit. Large parrots or macaws – we do not have the space they require. Large poultry/horses/livestock – we do not have the acreage they require. Large rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits and ferrets, are only accepted as space allows on an emergency basis. Contact us for more information. Recently we have received several inquires requesting a list of species which we can accept here at Living Earth. The short answer is that we will accept any animal which we have the resources for and are legally permitted to keep excluding domestic dogs and cats (we are at our self-imposed limit on cats & dogs – just our personal pets). In practice, the following are example species of what we are currently working with as resources allow: HERPS - Almost any species which is not listed above. Snakes, lizards, certain turtles & tortoises, frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, axolotl, etc. Depending on their required cage size. RODENTS - Mongolian gerbils, African soft furred rats (ASFs), Chinese hamsters, dwarf hamsters, Syrian hamsters, Mice, etc., including other small exotic rodents. INVERTEBRATES & FISH - hermit crabs, scorpions, tarantulas, millipedes, hissing & other roaches, etc. We accept fish with their tank, Bettas with or without tank. BIRDS – While our specialty is button (Chinese painted) quail & Japanese (Coturnix) quail, plus other quail & chukar species, we have experience with and can accept softbills like finches, canaries, diamond & ringneck doves, white doves & homing pigeons. We can also work with small to medium hookbills, budgies, green cheek & other smaller conures, Indian ringnecks, lovebirds, etc. We do reserve the right to refer people to local bird rescues, rather than take them in ourselves. Generally speaking, we require that the enclosure accompany the animal, unless the enclosure is larger than a 40 breeder aquarium in size (approximately 36x24x18 inches). In part because we need the enclosure to house the animal, but also because too many people have indicated that they are getting rid of (dumping) one animal because they plan to get another animal and put it in that enclosure, and we don't feel that is responsible pet ownership in the best interests of the animal. Large rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, ferrets, and larger hookbills only accepted as space allows, on an emergency basis, and these animals will likely be fostered with our network of helpers or rehomed as soon as a suitable home is found, due to space issues. We do reserve the right to refer people to local rescues, rather than take them in ourselves. We are NOT hoarders, and we are NOT flippers! We only want what is best for the animal, and that includes if there is a better place for an animal than with us. Contact us for more information. |
